Biography Jan Jaap "Jay" Onverwagt

So. I'm a super Dutch guy, born in Delft and raised in Tilburg. That's where I first decided I should become a bass player because my two best friends were already playing guitar and drums. Obviously we sucked but we had a lot of fun and not before long my buddies in Green Lizard asked me to join their band.

I've been with GL for almost 12 years. We've played shows all over the globe and got a pretty decent following everywhere.
While we were on tour in Belgium in the summer of 2002, we played this festival that (among others) featured Jaya the Cat and Guns 'n Roses. Me and a couple of my friends really wanted to stay till the very end and see what ol' Axl was gonna come up with this time, while the guys in Jaya the Cat didn't give two shits about him and his rock star shenannigans. They did care about the free beer that was flowing profusely though, which was the reason for us (Jaya and GL) being the only two bands left in the backstage area. Oh and Guns 'n Roses of course but fuck them right?

That's how we met and that's how me and my buddy Alejandro ended up playing for Jaya when half their band quit and Geoff and The Germ moved to Amsterdam. I was still in Green Lizard at the time and even though I loved both bands, I felt I had to follow through on what I'd started in Tilburg back in '96. This meant Jaya moved Steven up on bass for gigs I couldn't do cause I was playing GL shows.

Then, in early 2006, Jaya was about to embark on an awesome tour through Germany and Austria and I happened to have some time off from my other band. At this point, Steven had been playing a lot of shows and even had a fucking girl waiting for him in Vienna. The same girl by the way that I was totally making out with the last time I was over there. But apparently, if it's time for Steven to "fill in" for you on tour, he doesn't stop when the gig has ended... Anyway, I couldn't just tell him to stay home cause I was able to do this one tour and then have him fill in for me again when we got back, so I made a life altering decision. I was gonna join the tour on keyboards. Which, at that point, were still referred to as gayboards. I thought I looked stupid and I still kinda do but somehow I've come to love the damn things.

A little under two years later I quit Green Lizard and here I am. Jan Jaap Onverwagt, keyboard player not-so-extraordinaire. Every now and again that's a harsh reality so I deal with it by playing completely wasted zoinked out of my head. Having a bar on stage helps he he.
I love doing shows either way and the smiles and the boobies make it all worth while.
Throw me a towel when you see me playing. I'm a sweaty guy. I should probably start working out or something.
But enough about me. How about you, what do you think of me?

Hobbies:
Rocking out, making out, hanging out, going out, chilling out, freaking out, working out, coming out, zoinking out. Oh, and kicking the Germ's ass at pool.

Favorite bands:
I think it's safe to say I kinda like them all...

Favorite song:
I just checked which song I've played the most and it's Blood Money by 10 Ft Ganja Plant so I guess that must be my favorite song. It's on their album Bass Chalice. Check it out baby, it's the snake's eyebrow's!

Favorite Jaya song:
I guess it's probably Mistake. I love the lyrics and the feel and the fact that I don't have to play keyboards on it live so i can jam out on the tambourine whoop whoop!

Funniest tour story:
No clue. So much shit happens all the time but it's all a massive blur. There's the time we had to play a song for the cops in Slovenia to get our passports back, or the time we took three hours to build a camp fire at the Black Sea, or the Croatian customs officer that took half our merch just to let us through even though he had a massive sign that said "No Bribes" over his head, or all the times the Germ fell over, or everything that went wrong after me and Geoff decided to start our tour by having a red wine drinking contest. Ah, the memories... Or rather the lack of memories. Which doesn't matter cause before you know it, we get to do it all over again.

Coolest place to tour:
Wherever our next show is at.

Equipment I use:
Nord Electro 2 Keyboard (Best fake Hammond out there!)
Nord Lead 2x Keyboard (Soon to be replaced by a Nord Wave thank you very much)
Korg N364 Keyboard (For the crappy sounding piano skank)
Roland Juno 60 Keyboard (Makes awesome noises but is so old so it breaks down all the time)
Yamaha P32 Melodica (If anyone knows how to mic these, please let me know cause I'd like to use it live)
Tambourine (Yes, that's an instrument too. Fuck you)
Fender Precision Lyte Deluxe Bass (Best bass ever I don't care what your local guitar nerd says)
Musicman Stingray Bass (Jeroen is borrowing this from me cause I play gayboards now MEH)
Ampeg SVT4 Pro Bass Amp (If anyone knows where to get these fixed, let me know cause it done broke down on me)
Ampeg 8x10" Bass Cab (Jeroen is using this as well. As he should. Cause it's LOUD)
