Biography David "The Germ" Germain

I was Born in Mons, Belgium, but grew up in Chicopee MA with five brothers and sisters. I quickly learned from a young age I liked hitting stuff, so I became a drummer. I saved up all my money from my paper route and bought my first drumset at the age of 12.
Cleared out a spot in the attic and played every day, never really having any lessons, i started drumming every style of music i could think of.During High School I would have various friends over playing music, tripping our faces off while my mom was having volleyball practice outside in the backyard.

When I joined the band Shadows Fall, we were all so flat broke that we had a huge keg party in that same backyard to raise money for us to go on tour. The Germain domain is not affraid to drink! (even for money)

After living the alcohol fueled metal lifestyle on the road with Shadows Fall for about five years, it became too much for me. I got sick of seeing a bunch of metal dudes killing each other in the pit, I wasn’t happy and started drinking way to much which effected my playing, so eventually we all decided it was time for me to go.

Believe me I was sad, but two weeks later I was playing the Warped Tour with Jaya the Cat so it all worked out. As life does!

And now living in Amsterdam, touring with Jaya is a whole different story, oh yeah we still drink a lot!
(Hence all the scars and injuries i’ve accumulated over the years...) But seeing a smile instead of a bloody fist in the crowd is a hell of a lot more fun for me!

I do love this shit, and i can’t wait to record again so we can keep the party rolling....
So remember: Smile often and drink forever!

Oh, and if you’ve found my hat, please return it to me... My head is cold!

Hobbies:
I'm not one to read some mind altering novel or to write some gay ass poetry... I'm more than happy to sit and chat at a bar or play some darts or kick your ass at pool. Also I love chilling at home with my girlfriend and my kitty boy playing bass fishing on the Wii. Or having a few people over for a poker game. Anything that involves being with friends and havin a few beers!

Favorite bands:
I've loved a lot of bands growing up. Like... Janes Addiction, NIN, Metalica, The Doors, The Dead Kennedy's, George Clinton and a bunch of other shit. Music used to mean sooo much to me back then. Now I'm not too picky, I do listen to Ziggy Stardust or Flaming Lips a lot lately. We're on the road so much i just listen to whatever passes the time the best i suppose... Hehe

Favorite song:
"Bird on a wire" as sung by Lennard Cohen...I 'd like it to be played at my funeral.

Favorite Jaya song:
Shit...good question. I like Night Bus cause it reminds me of my life and it's wicked fun to play on drums!! I like Pass The Ammunition cause Geoff's lyrics and the different feel of the song. But on CD I think I like Voice Of The Poor!!.. for a couple reasons. For one, it was the first song me and Geoff wrote after Dave and Ben left the band and we moved to Amsterdam. And second I love how HUGE it sounds! With all the different layers that come and go thrughout the song and the creepy melodica line and the dark message it brings... I like alot of Jaya songs!! That's  the beauty of being the drummer and not writing much of it. I get to enjoy it instead of obsessing over it. Sweet!!

Funniest tour story:
Well...I've been so drunk I woke up pissing in a closet which happened to have my own shoes in it or when I fell and slit my throat wide open and got 12 stiches in Austria (not that funny I guess), or when we had to stay on the floor of some youth hostel and got woken up wicked early by a huge German. He asks if we'd like to take a shower... nice enough... then says with a creepy smile "zhere are no showers"!! He thought that was hilariuos! Weird. There are sooo many more. Wait for Jay's book, I'm sure he'll write one eventually.

Coolest place to tour:
I can't say. I love Austria, and Germany and lately we went to Eastern Europe and that was fucking awesome too. Wherever we go we have a good time. So it's all good really... Man I'm starting to get bored with this stupid survey. Hmmm. Anyway, moving on...hehe

Equipment I use:
I use a borrowed Sonor drum kit from our old tour manager Jan Visser. It's kind of old but it sounds soooo good!! Stays in tune forever. It's force maple with 10,12 and 14 inch toms.

I don't get any endorsements as of yet so I won't give you specific brands of cymbals but I've got 2 crashes, 1 china, 1 splash, 1 ride and hi-hats. Also I use a timbale, set up on the left side of my hats.

Balbex drumsticks. They're from the Czech Republic and they're wicked cheap. My ego finally got big enough to print my name on them, courtesy of the nice people from patsticks.nl
Iron Cobra double bass pedals. Awesome!
And a Roland SPD-S drum sampler... I just got that. Wicked fun.

Note: If any particular companys want to give me free or discount equipment I'd be happy to accept and hit the living shit out of it baby!!
